A graduate of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, Hu Xiaoyuan has become one of the leading figures in contemporary art. Born in Harbin, China, in 1977, she works across installation, sculpture, painting, and mixed media, employing materials such as silk, wood, hair, metal, and handmade objects to explore themes of time, memory, and existence. Through poetic symbolism and carefully constructed environments, Hu examines the tensions between permanence and impermanence, presence and absence, and the fragility of human experience.
Hu was among the first Chinese artists to participate in Documenta 12 in 2007, marking a significant milestone in her international career. Her work has been exhibited widely at institutions including the New Museum, New York; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai; and the Taipei Biennial, and she is recognized as one of the leading voices in contemporary art.
