Julia Jo (b.1991, South Korea) is a New York-based painter who holds a BFA from Smith College and an MFA from Parsons School of Design. Jo’s practice encompasses a distinctive style of oil painting that incorporates a vibrant color palette to render compositions that move between representation and abstraction. Having spent her formative years between South Korea and the U.S., Jo draws inspiration from experiences of cultural translation, social misunderstandings, and emotional distance. Her paintings are grounded in the self-doubt, conflict, and misunderstanding that can arise in any relationship. Through expressive depictions of human figures and familiar objects, she uses line, color, and shadow to reveal certain details while leaving others obscured.
Jo has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Charles Moffett, New York, NY, James Fuentes, Los Angeles, CA, and Jessican Silverman, San Francisco, CA. In the fall of 2023, she participated in the esteemed Beecher Residency in Litchfield, CT. Her work is in the permanent collections of ICA Miami, High Museum of Art, Smith College Museum of Art and the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College. Jo is represented by Charles Moffett Gallery.
