Rising to prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Lee Bul has become one of South Korea's most influential contemporary artists. Born in Yeongju, South Korea in 1964, she is known for ambitious sculptures, installations, performances, and multimedia works that investigate the relationships between technology, the body, and utopian ideals. Drawing on science fiction, architecture, and the history of technological progress, Lee creates works that are both seductive and unsettling, exploring themes of aspiration, transformation, and human vulnerability.
Lee has been the subject of major exhibitions at institutions including the Hayward Gallery, London; the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; the New Museum, New York; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. She represented South Korea at the Venice Biennale in 1999 and is widely regarded as one of the country's most significant living artists.
