Born in Beijing in 1972, Liu Wei graduated from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou in 1996 and has become one of the leading figures in contemporary Chinese art. Emerging during a period of rapid urbanization and social change in China, he explores the physical and psychological realities of urban life, drawing on themes of construction, decay, excess, and transformation. Using materials ranging from books and found objects to steel, wood, and industrial debris, he works across painting, sculpture, installation, video, and photography. Liu creates works that examine humanity’s relationship to the built environment and the forces shaping contemporary life.
Liu has exhibited internationally at major institutions including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Centre Pompidou, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Long Museum. He has also participated in major international exhibitions including the Venice Biennale and the Shanghai Biennale.
