Asif Hoque is a rising contemporary artist, building his own mythos in his paintings while drawing from the classical traditions of both East and West. Hoque’s art blends his Bengali heritage, his upbringing in Florida, and his early years spent in Rome, Italy, with Western classical influences, including the Baroque grandeur of Peter Paul Rubens, creating a dynamic fusion of cultural and emotional expression. His work spans both large-scale, narrative-driven pieces and more intimate, introspective reflections, drawing on South Asian miniature painting, Rubens’ dramatic compositions, and his own diverse cultural background. Over time, Hoque’s practice has expanded to include a deep connection to nature, inspired by his Florida upbringing and the transcendental approach of artists like Agnes Pelton. Gold plays a central role in his work, symbolizing both light and memory, particularly tied to a family crest necklace that became a symbol of protection and love.
Hoque has worked with Yossi Milo Gallery, Half Gallery and Mindy Solomon Gallery. His work has been exhibited at Taymour Grahne Projects, London; Almine Rech Gallery, Brussels; New Image Art Gallery, Los Angeles; Mindy Solomon Gallery, Miami; NS Kapp Kapp, New York, among others. Hoque’s work is in the permanent collections of the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach; Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, and the Xiao Hui Wang Art Museum, Suzhou, China.
