Working across sculpture, photography, and site-responsive installation, Lotus L. Kang explores the ways materials change over time through their interactions with light, touch, humidity, and space. Born in Toronto in 1985, she studied at Concordia University in Montreal before earning an MFA from the Milton Avery School of the Arts at Bard College in 2015. Using light-sensitive photographic materials that continue to evolve after they leave the darkroom, Kang creates works that blur the boundaries between photography, sculpture, and installation. Drawing on personal and familial histories, her practice examines themes of memory, impermanence, inheritance, and the body's continual transformation.
Kang has exhibited internationally at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New Museum, SculptureCenter, Chisenhale Gallery, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. She participated in the 2024 Whitney Biennial and received a Guggenheim Fellowship the same year. Her work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, establishing her as one of the leading voices in contemporary photography, sculpture, and installation.
