Greg Ito (b. 1987, active Los Angeles) is a contemporary painter with deep roots in California: he is the grandson of Japanese immigrants who during the Second World War were forcibly relocated to a US internment camp. Ito himself was born in Los Angeles, where he returned after earning his BFA from San Francisco Art Institute.
This background informs his paintings that are meticulously rendered in bright, flat colors to juxtapose symbols of the state’s natural bounty (butterflies) and opportunity with the ever-present threat of natural disasters (in many cases wildfires). His artwork creates a push/pull relationship with life, fortune, adversity, sorrow and joy all told in a cinematic display rooted in personal narrative. Ito’s artwork is in the permanent collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, CA; Institute of Contemporary Art Miami (ICA Miami); K11 Art Foundation, Hong Kong; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
