Fascinated with visual and written languages, Xu Bing (b. 1955, active New York and Beijing) is one of the leading conceptual artists working today, known for mixed-media installations that simultaneously evoke and subvert centuries-old Chinese cultural traditions, such as calligraphy, wood-block printing, and landscape painting scrolls.
Xu received his BFA and MFA from Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, where he studied printmaking. He moved to the US in the early 90s, first working in Wisconsin and then moved to New York City, where he lived for almost two decades. In 2007, he returned to China and assumed several leadership roles at the Central Academy of Fine Art. Xu has received numerous awards including a MacArthur Fellowship (1999) and an honorary doctorate at Columbia University (2015). His artwork has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; the Museo Reina Sofia and the Joan Miró Foundation in Spain.
