Yu Hong (b. 1966, active Beijing) is prominent Chinese contemporary artist who gained early recognition in the avant-garde art movement emerging in China during the 1980s. She is best known for her deeply personal paintings that explore themes of memory, femininity, and societal change. These often feature intimate portraits of women, reflecting the shifting roles and expectations in Chinese society.
She holds both an MFA and a BFA in oil painting from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, where she has been a professor since 1988. Her first major American museum show opened in September 2023 at SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, GA and her work was featured in “Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World” (2017) at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Her artwork is in the permanent collections in the Long Museum, Shanghai; CAFA Art Museum, Beijing; Shanghai Art Museum; and the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing. Read more
