Zhang Enli (b. 1965, active Shanghai) is a contemporary Chinese artist born in Jilin Province. He is best known for his introspective paintings that often depict everyday objects and interior spaces, exploring themes of transience, memory, and the passage of time.
His recent paintings feature loose, gestural brushwork and a subdued color palette, creating a sense of intimacy and contemplation. Zhang Enli’s technique owes much to traditional Chinese brush painting using ink or watercolor, where each brushstroke is a specific and unique gesture that holds its own space in the overall composition. He graduated from the Arts & Design Institute of Wuxi Technical University, China in 1989, and afterwards taught at the Arts and Design Institute of Donghua University. Zhang Enli’s artwork is in the permanent collections of major institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Long Museum, Shanghai; Royal Academy of Arts and Tate in London. He is represented by Hauser & Wirth. Read more
